Why Is My Bathtub Leaking Into the Ceiling?

Quick answer

A leak below a bathtub can come from the pressurized supply/valve, the overflow, the drain shoe, the trap/drain piping, or water escaping around the tub or shower enclosure. The fastest path is to isolate when the leak occurs.

First thing to determine

Ask what has to happen before water appears below: does it leak with the valve running but the drain closed, only while draining, only when the tub is filled high enough to reach the overflow, or only during shower use?

Common causes

  • Tub drain shoe or gasket leak
  • Overflow gasket or overflow assembly leak
  • P-trap or waste piping leak
  • Tub/shower valve or supply leak
  • Water escaping around trim, enclosure or wall surfaces

What to check

  • Test the drain without immediately filling to the overflow
  • Observe accessible piping while draining if safe access exists
  • Test the overflow separately by bringing water to that level
  • Compare tub-filling behavior with shower-use behavior
  • Stop testing if water is actively damaging the ceiling or electrical area

What not to do

Do not repeatedly soak the ceiling trying every test at once. Isolate one water path at a time and stop when the leak is reproduced.
